The Fife Flyers ice hockey club is pleased to announce the signing of 36-year-old Czech striker Martin Láthal for the upcoming season. Látal is no stranger to elite ice hockey, having played two seasons with the current league champions Sheffield Steelers between 2021 and 2023.

Before his time in Yorkshire, the 36-year-old, 1.78m tall Czech played 14 seasons in the Extraliga in the Czech Republic, most recently with Litvinov. Before that, he played for 5 seasons with Mladen Boleslav, where his father was coach. In 645 games, he scored 63 goals and made 109 assists. Before that, Martin played junior hockey in his hometown of Kladno.

He also played a few minor league seasons in the QMJHL with Prince Edward Island, where he played with Dylan Quail, who would later play for the Flyers. He made his professional debut with Sparta Prague in 2008, where he made 645 appearances, scoring 63 goals and providing 109 assists.

In his first full season with the club, Martin was third on the team in scoring just over a point per game, scoring 22 goals and providing 28 assists in 52 games. He then scored 41 points in the second half of the season in Yorkshire. The previous season, Martin had played in the Polish Hockey League for Kraków, scoring 31 points in 32 games before moving to the French Ligue Magnus for the remainder of the season.

Latál is the eleventh Czech-born player to play for the Flyers and the fourth to play in the European Hockey League (EIHL). His family is excited to welcome him to the team.

“I had a great conversation with the coach and my decision was made very quickly,” he said. “I'm looking forward to working with him and I'm sure we'll have a great season and play well together.”

Tom Coolen, Fife head coach, said: “We are delighted to welcome Martin Latal to Fife, who brings a wealth of experience, speed and skill. He has proven his quality in a world-class competition such as the Bohemian Extraliga and was a key player and goalscorer for two seasons with the Sheffield Steelers.”
