A search is currently underway for the occupant(s) of a vehicle that plunged into the waters of the Rivière des Prairies between Montreal and Laval.

The police received an emergency call at around 4:50 a.m. on Sunday morning about a vehicle that had fallen into the river in Ahuntsic near Maurice Richard Park.

“The vehicle is completely submerged,” said SPVM spokeswoman Véronique Dubuc. “According to witnesses, a man was seen in the water near the vehicle in question.”

“An operation is underway to locate this individual and determine whether one or more occupants were in the building during the incident.”

Members of the Tactical Intervention Group (GTI) and divers from the SPVM were called to the scene. Teams from the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal (SIM) and the Canadian Coast Guard were also called in to provide reinforcement.

“The causes of this event have yet to be determined,” Dubuc said.

The operation is still ongoing.
