What a great Saturday of high school championship action across Rhode Island! Here's everything you need to know

Saturday was a day that would go down in the record books – several times over.

The high school championships were decided on the track, softball field, lacrosse field and tennis court, and the award-winning sports editors of the Providence Journal – Bill Cook, Eric Rueb And Jacob Rousseauphotographers Kris Craig and David Delpoio and freelancers Will Geoghegan and Emma Marion – were everywhere.

So if you missed the history being made across Rhode Island on a pristine spring Saturday, don't worry. We've got you covered.

Here's a look at one of the busiest days on the high school sports calendar:

BOYS LACROSSE

∎In Division I, the La Salle Rams — Win the boys lacrosse title. This was the 12th consecutive championship for La Salle, which won a 19-1 final against Moses Brown at Brown University's Stevenson Field. The Rams scored the most goals in a state championship game and had the biggest win in the final game of the season. The Rams had scored 15 goals in 2017 and 2022, the previous high.

∎In the division II, the Prout CruSaders have got some redemptionbecause most of the lacrosse players were on the hockey team that was coming off a 1-0 double-overtime loss to the Frozen Four this winter. But on Saturday afternoon at Brown, Prout proved its championship chops by defeating Pilgrim 13-8 to earn the program's fifth Rhode Island Interscholastic League title.

∎Division III has gone to the dogs… again. Westerly's Bulldogs won their second consecutive Rhode Island Interscholastic League title by beating Smithfield 8-6. Westerly goalkeeper Ryder Casady described it like this: “This year has been a rollercoaster ride with ups and downs. But overall we managed it and it's just a great feeling to get two wins in a row.”

∎North Smithfield played with fire – and tempted fate by holding championship hats. But after heartbreaking defeats in 2021 and 2022nothing could stop these Northmen from completing their task. No. 1 North Smithfield (16-1) extended its lead in the third quarter and withstood a late push from second-seeded Lincoln to take a 5-3 triumph in the Division IV championship.

BOYS TENNIS

∎The lights went out at Slater Park, but it was the Barrington duo of Garrett Meehan and Justin Kuo that ended La Salle's three-year Division I title streak. It was the third straight season that the Eagles and Rams battled for the state title. This time undefeated Barrington did the jobwith the No. 3 doubles team winning the last points.

∎The crowd was focused on the match between East Greenwich's David Levy and North Kingstown's Owen Tegan. Levy's already incredible debut season got even better on Saturday. Levy started the first set strongly, looked to be on fire in the second set, but had to survive an impressive comeback from Tegan before taking the win. East Greenwich won 4-3 and secured the Division II title.

∎Finishing the year undefeated and winning the league title is no easy task. But North Smithfield did just that – just as the Northmen have won every game this season by relying on every single player in the rankings. On Saturday North Smithfield won 4-0 against Cranston East and put the finishing touches to the Northmen’s undefeated championship season.

GIRLS TRACK

Records were broken at Conley Stadium in Providence and the path to a The title in the outdoor team competition went to sisters Lisa Raye and Xenia Raye from West Warwick.The Wizards scored a total of 76 points, surpassing second-place Cranston West's 59 points, and added to their growing accolades. Lisa Raye set new state records in three events and won four gold medals, while Xenia Raye set a new meet record in the 400-meter event.

Boys' Athletics

Barrington's roots in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League stretch back to the league's founding in the 1930s. But Saturday was a first for the Eagles – a national championship for boys outdoors. Bishop Hendricken and La Salle offered plenty of fighting spirit, but the Eagles left Conley Stadium with three gold medals, nine other top-three finishes and 120 team points.

SOFT BALL

∎How about a day at work: Cranston East freshman pitcher Isabella Sousa struck out 16 Pawtucket batters, her defense made only one error behind her, and in the fifth inning, after failing to get a bunt, Sousa hit a grand slam that lifted the undefeated Thunderbolts to a 10-1 victory at Rhode Island College and the School's first Division III fastpitch softball championship.

∎Only two starters from last year's title-winning Central Falls team were back, but it didn't take long for Chloe Acosta and Arghennis Disla and their Blackstone Valley Prep classmates to hit it off with their new teammates. This special season ended with a 12-8 comeback victory over the Providence Cooperative of Times 2 Academy/Paul Cuffee and a Division IV title. Coach Selena Martinez said, “We really did it. It's a great accomplishment to win two games in a row. It was basically a brand new team.”

Department III: Narragansett vs. Westerly, 2 p.m.

Department II: Chariho vs North Kingstown, 4pm

First League: La Salle vs. Moses Brown, 6 p.m.
