The Northwest YMCA in Regina was evacuated Sunday due to a small chlorine leak.

Regina YMCA CEO Steve Compton said that “an odor was detected in the building around 10 a.m. CST” and the building manager decided to evacuate everyone out of an abundance of caution.

“We discovered there was a leak in our chlorine distribution system,” the fire department said [and] “The hazmat response team came out,” Compton said.

The Northwest location will be closed on this day and until further notice while cleanup or repairs are completed.

According to the Regina Fire Department (RFD), the leak is believed to have originated from a valve in the pool maintenance system located in the pool building.

“At the low levels like we found here on site with a small leak, you may see something like eye and nose irritation and a sore throat, possibly a cough,” said RFD Deputy Dustin McCullough. Boss.

McCullough said the fire department was not aware of anyone injured or ill from the leak.

He added this type of leak is relatively rare, but the RFD is trained in the event of a chlorine leak and ventilated the building in this case.
