0

Maybritt C. Horne, 89, of Granby, beloved wife of the late Robert Douglas Horne for 40 years, passed away peacefully and was reunited with her parents, husband and daughter at her home on Monday, May 27, 2024. She was born November 19, 1934 in Mineola, NY to the late Gosta and Thora (Loland) Carlson, raised in Great Neck, Long Island, New York and graduated from Great Neck High School in 1952.

After high school, Maybritt continued her education at Green Mountain College in Vermont. While in college, she was invited to visit a college friend in Granby, Connecticut for winter break. During the visit, the young girls attended a party where Maybritt was introduced to Robert Horne. The young couple began dating and married on September 19, 1954. Maybritt and Robert moved to Granby, Maybritt took a job at Kaman Aerospace in Bloomfield and shortly thereafter they started a family and Maybritt stayed home to raise their three children. In 1970, Maybritt and Robert were devastated to lose their six-year-old daughter, Janis Cheryl Horne. With the other children in school, Robert encouraged Maybritt to go back to work and she took a job as an executive secretary at Granby Insurance. She loved her job and helping the many clients she dealt with. She stayed for over 30 years and retired in 2000.

In her free time, Maybritt enjoyed visiting the Granby Senior Center, the Granby Public Library, and the Frederick H. Cossitt Library in North Granby. Library staff knew her well and often set aside romance novels and other books they thought she would enjoy. She was also an avid gardener and helped start the Sow and Reap Garden Club at her church, the South Congregational Church on Salmon Brook Street in Granby Center. Maybritt will be remembered as a quiet and reserved woman who loved her cats and dogs – Nissa, Max, Slugger, Snowball, Pixie, and Dixie – listening to her favorite music, relaxing at home, and most of all, spending time with her family. She was very proud of her Swedish and Norwegian-Scandinavian heritage and enjoyed sharing it with her children and later her grandchildren.

She leaves behind two children, Lynn H. Van De Bogart and her husband, Charles, of Harmony, ME, and David S. Horne and his wife, Christy, of Brentwood, NH; three grandchildren, Michelle R. Van De Bogart of Raleigh, NC, Jonathan R. Van De Bogart of Granby, and Ava R. Horne of Brentwood, NH; a sister, Lonne Dillinger-Clapp of Huntington, Long Island, NY; a brother, Glenn Carlson and his wife, Linda, of New London; and five nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Robert, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Janis Cheryl Horne, and a granddaughter, Britt Marie Horne.

A private funeral service will be held at Granby Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Granby Ambulance Association, 1 Pegville Rd., Granby, CT 06035, or at www.granbyambulance.org. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Trinity Health Wound Center in Enfield, especially Moe, Ed and Dee, for their special care and compassion for Maybritt. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home in Granby. Online condolences may be found at www.carmonfuneralhome.com.
