Chief Marilyn Slett of the Heiltsuk Tribal Council in Bella Bella, BC, said discussions about Pickton in a Quebec prison after the attack had brought back horrific memories for indigenous people.

According to Slett, who is also secretary-treasurer of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, Indigenous women still face systemic racism when it comes to their personal safety and access to the justice system when they become victims of crime.

Robert Pickton boasted of killing 49 women

Pickton once boasted to an undercover agent that he had killed a total of 49 people. The remains or DNA of 33 women were discovered on his farm in Port Coquitlam, BC.

At a press conference on Friday, British Columbia Premier David Eby said his thoughts were primarily with the victims and their families.

Robert Picton targeted the weakest members of society

“I want to pause and reflect on the fact that Robert Pickton is targeting the most vulnerable members of our society,” Eby noted.

“Our main priorities should continue to be upholding the human dignity of every person in this province and ensuring that everyone is valued and welcome.
