Archaeologist Matt Hull announced Monday that he is seeking a seat on the Bismarck City Commission.

Hull is principal and principal investigator of the cultural resources team at SWCA Environmental Consultants. He said he has always been interested in politics and was inspired to run for office after attending the Bismarck Citizens Academy, a program run by the city to expand knowledge of municipal operations.

“I believe the job of a city commissioner is to be the voice of the people. So for the last few months I have been listening to what residents want from the city to improve it,” he said. “Throughout the campaign and if elected, I will continue to reach out and listen to residents.”

Hull said his background in anthropology and archeology will enhance the city commission's ability to consider the immediate and long-term impacts of city decisions on Bismarck's residents, land and culture. He said his top priority as commissioner is to ensure that his service makes Bismarck a better place for all of its residents.

“I love what this community has to offer and hope that if elected, this great community can continue to grow for the benefit of all,” he said.

The Bismarck City Commission consists of four commissioners and the mayor, who serves as chairman. The term is four years. Michael Connelly and Steve Marquardt's seats are vacant this year. They have not publicly announced their intentions. The election will take place on June 11th.
