The Terry Fox Foundation recognizes three area schools for donations raised during the 2023 run

Since 1981, the Terry Fox Run has raised over $800 million nationwide for cancer research.

The Terry Fox Foundation has recognized three area schools as the top 50 fundraisers in Saskatchewan last year. Their contributions added to the $800 million raised for cancer research since 1981.

The foundation recently sent a letter to the Prairie South School Division announcing that Assiniboia Seventh Avenue Elementary School, École Gravelbourg High School and Craik High School made the list after raising a significant amount during the 2023 Terry Fox Run.

Among elementary schools, Assiniboia was the fourth largest school with $7,412.25, while among high schools, Gravelbourg was 11th with $5,328.90 and Craik was 23rd with $4,114.

Deanna Holowachuk, the foundation's school development officer for Manitoba and Saskatchewan, said in the letter that the department has shown “remarkable support” for the Terry Fox Foundation and that they are “proud of their extraordinary dedication and commitment to carrying on Terry's legacy.”

“The commitment of your schools has made groundbreaking initiatives like our Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network possible,” she continued.

This collaboration has brought together hospitals, research institutes and fundraising organizations to work together to revolutionize cancer diagnosis, treatment and prevention, Holowachuk explained. This collaboration has been a glimmer of hope for many cancer patients.

“We are deeply grateful for the support and thank you to everyone who embodies the values of resilience, determination and compassion that Terry Fox himself embodied,” she added, “and (thank you) for supporting us in our mission to create a world without cancer.”

Mary Jukes, a Prairie South trustee, said during the board meeting in May that she remembers when Moose Jaw hosted its first Terry Fox Run and seeing a large bus parked in front of the former YMCA building in support of the initiative. She also highlighted Ray Boughen and John Livingstone, who were the two main organizers for several years.

“So Moose Jaw has a long history with the Terry Fox Run,” she added. “That's good to know.”

Prairie South's next board meeting will be on Wednesday, June 5.
