Serenity and brutalism meet at Sushibox in Quebec

Future Simple Studio has unveiled the redesign of Sushibox, a Japanese restaurant in Quebec.

The redesigned interiors combine strong lines with select natural textures and neutral tones, creating an atmosphere that is both brutalist and serene.

Upon entering, guests enter the restaurant through a ribbed glass vestibule, the focal point of which is a long concrete counter—handcrafted in collaboration with artist Zian Miscioscia—that crosses a large, circular opening that leads to the dining room.

The take-out area, decorated in neutral tones, is fitted with vertical blinds that let in plenty of sunlight. The gentle use of rough textures, such as large ceramic floor tiles and concrete-finished walls, creates a calm yet sensual atmosphere. The simple white oak work further underlines the tranquil atmosphere.

Beyond the circular opening and down a few steps is a cozy bar and dining area. At the bar counter, each seat is adorned with its own lava stone pendant by David Pompa, while 16 concrete squares are set into a concrete-topped liquor display case at the end of the counter.

Behind the bar is an open kitchen with a custom stainless steel counter adorned with white oak shelving and softly lit frosted glass panels. Black tables frame a lush greenery in two large, custom planters by Edith Sevigny-Martel.

“We firmly believe that ambience and aesthetics are essential to an exceptional dining experience,” says Thomas Casault, owner of Sushibox. “With their redesign, Future Simple Studio has impressively combined functionality with artistic brilliance. They have understood the essence of our mission to create an environment that pushes boundaries and leaves a lasting impression on everyone who walks through our doors.”
