PAPINEAUVILLE, Que. – Alcohol and speeding are suspected in a Friday night car crash that left one young man dead and four others seriously injured late Friday night in Papineauville, about 100 kilometres east of Gatineau.

Emergency crews were called to Highway 50 around 3:15 a.m., the Sûreté du Québec said.

“It was a single vehicle with five passengers, traveling at high speed according to witnesses. (The driver) lost control and hit the guardrail before overturning,” SQ spokesman Stéphane Tremblay said on Saturday.

“The driver was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead in hospital later that night,” he said.

The victim is a 22-year-old man from Longueuil on Montreal's south shore.

All four passengers were injured, but their condition is not considered life-threatening.

“We already know that alcohol and speed may have played a role in this collision,” Tremblay said.

Highway 50 was closed to eastbound traffic in this area until Saturday morning.

The SQ investigation continues.
