The Washington Capitals want to go on the offensive and improve their blue line

Sammi Silver from The Hockey News: The Washington Capitals are looking to strengthen their offense this offseason, but also improve their defense. Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery would like to add more size and speed.

“When you start analyzing individual players, what traits do we probably need to add? Size in the backend, I think, and speed is at the top.”

A defenseman who can move the puck would be a nice addition.

Two UFA defensemen who could be available when free agency begins are Brandon Montour and Brett Pesce. Capitals GM Brian MacLellan has also said the transfer market could be an option.

The Montreal Canadiens have to make some decisions about five candidates

Marco D'Amico of Montreal Hockey Now: Teams are only allowed to have 50 contracts, so the Montreal Canadiens won't be able to keep them all. They have been drafting a lot of players lately – 29 players in the last three drafts.

The Canadiens have five players whose rights are subject to expiration and who could re-enter the draft or become free agents later in the offseason:

Jared Davidson – He would be entitled to a two-year entry-level contract and is likely to get one.

Cedrick Guindon – It would not be a surprise if he was not offered a contract.

Petteri Nurmi – A 2022 seventh-round pick as a 20-year-old. He is lower on the list of left-handed defensemen, so he is unlikely to be offered a contract.

Miguel Tourigny – A 2022 pick as a 20-year-old. Signed a two-way contract in the AHL and spent some time in the ECHL. Could be back there next year if he doesn't want to go to Europe.

NHL Rumors: Smith, Liljegren, Drouin, Lee, Swayman and the Montreal Canadiens

Blake Biondi – 2020 fourth-round pick who played in the NCAA at Minnesota-Duluth. He could become a free agent on August 15.
