Hull FC secures Championship loan for young hooker Denive Balmforth

Young Hull FC tackler Denive Balmforth has joined Swinton Lions on loan. The 20-year-old will spend at least the next two weeks at the Championship club and hopes to get some first-team time. Next week he will start against Featherstone Rovers.

Bamforth has made two Super League appearances for Hull this year, in games against Warrington Wolves and St. Helens. He has also played in half a dozen reserve games.

Of course, Balmforth is no stranger to the Championship, having played the entire 2023 season on loan at Newcastle Thunder, scoring six tries in 26 appearances.

He made his debut for Hull in the 2022 season after joining from Warrington, making four appearances after which Francis Cummins recently tasked him with bringing more consistency to his game and avoiding “lapses”.

Cummins told Hull Live last week: “With Denive, and this is true of a few other young lads, it's the inconsistency of his game. The top end is really good. When he gets running and gets on the ball quickly, he can smell an opportunity quicker than others, but you have to be an all-round package or something like that.”

“He's also got an all-time great coming up at that position. But to get into that squad, you have to be able to come in and not give too much away, and I think if we're being honest, Denive has a bit of work to do. He's not quite there yet where he can hold it all together. He can do something really good, and then he may start to fade.

“That's his age. He's a young man. Danny Houghton wasn't the Danny Houghton we see today when he was 18 and 19. That's it. We just need to give these players some confidence so they know their roles, stick together and get some minutes and hopefully progress and be in the starting lineup.”
