Born in Reading, UK and died in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Michael leaves behind his sisters Wendy (Malcolm), Rosemary and Elizabeth (Andrew) and his nieces and nephews Samantha, Louise, Charlie, Nicola, Sarah and Claire.
He experienced the war and the hardships of post-war England as a child. As a teenager he enjoyed the beauty of the Berkshire countryside, cycling around and listening to classical music with his radio strapped to his back.
Michael had a successful research career in chemistry. He received his B.SC. and Ph.D. (1971) from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. This was followed by postdoctoral studies at the University of Helsinki and later a position as research officer at the Finnish Water Board. In 1975 he was appointed as a research fellow at the Université de Montréal.
In 1981, he began his career at the Canadian Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), which he enjoyed very much. Already an environmentalist, he was one of Canada's leading catalyst researchers. He became an expert in fuel quality and related environmental emissions and sought to develop better catalysts. Michael published many articles throughout his career, including groundbreaking work in the Journal of Catalysis (1985). He served as President of the Canadian Catalyst Society and ended his career as Scientist Emeritus of NRCan in Victoria BC.
Blessed with the ability to learn languages, he was fluent in Finnish. His ability to reproduce the accent was so good that Helsinki Finn thought he was from the north. In Montreal, his high school French transformed into functional bilingualism while working in the lab and sitting in the Café Campus.
His musical ear was even better, he could recognise pieces of classical music, especially any piece by Brahms. With his beautiful singing voice he entertained us with folk songs from Britain, but especially from Scotland.
When he came to Ottawa in 1974, he discovered the cross-country ski trails in Gatineau Park. He had learned to ski in Finland, but he found the trails in Gatineau Park the best. He loved the view of Mount Baker from his home in Sydney, BC, and never stopped admiring the Olympic Mountains when he drove to Victoria. He thought we had so much more to learn about the universe and wanted people to look up.
